Spanish football league returns this weekend as La Liga heads in 2017. As ever, the new year brings new challenges and new opportunities , some with more on the line than others.
Real Madrid 5-0 Granada
Madrid equaled Barcelona’s 39-game-unbeaten run record as they thrashed Granada at the Santiago Bernabeu. Zinedine Zidane’s side were dominant from start and after just 12 minutes Karim Benzema played in Isco who’s shot was too strong for Guillermo Ochoa. Benzema then doubled the lead after 20 minutes when Modric’s shot was saved and rolled into the path of the Frenchman.
Madrid, finding the net for the third time when Marcelo crossed for an unmarked Cristiano Ronaldo who headed in. Three minutes after Isco grabbed his second from a Modric cross across the face of the goal.
The game was beyond the reach of Granada after 12 minutes into the second half when James Rodriguez’s freekick fell to Casemiro at the back post who bundled in his first of the season
Atletico Madrid 2-0 Eibar
French international Griezmann ended his La Liga goal drought by scoring Atletico’s second goal against Eibar. Dribbling forward and playing a pass with comrade Kevin Gameiro before blasting into the net in 74th minute.
Saul Niguez broke deadlock on a freezing cold pitch in the 54th minute by a Filipe Luis cross from a short corner routine.
Atletico was under plenty of pressure from the home side after scoring the first goal. However, they sealed the points with Griezmann’s first league goal since he scored against Valencia on Oct. 2.
“It was a difficult game in a difficult ground, we gave everything. We struggled to get into the game at first but we were much better in the second half,” Griezmann said.
Real Sociedad 0-4 Sevilla
Sevilla are up to second after a crushing win over Champions League rivals Sociedad.
Two goals in four minutes from Wissam Ben Yedder put the away side 2-0 up after 29 minutes. The first goal came when Franco Vazquez’s long range effort was palmed away by Geronimo Rulli. The Frenchman finished on the follow up.
His second came when Vazquez headed a clearance into his path. The 26-year-old had the composure to round the keeper and finish.
Ben Yedder turned provider for the third, he passed into the oncoming Pablo Sarabia who finished low into the bottom corner.
Ben Yedder completed his hat-trick with seven minutes to play. When Nico Pareja split the Sociedad defence and the striker drove his shot low into the net.
